About our Course

The Academy runs practical comprehensive courses for those with appropriate medical qualifications.

For the past thirty years the BAWMA has been responsible for a high calibre of Western Medical Acupuncture training for NHS Healthcare Professionals. Many Doctors, Registered Nurses, Midwives, Physiotherapists, Osteopathic and Chiropractic colleagues have successfully undertake our Licientiate course in Acupuncture at the Liverpool Medical Institution, Darlington Memorial Hospital and just recently at Liverpool John Moores University. We presently have hundreds of graduates in Western Medical Acupuncture working successfully in NHS hospitals and GP practices treating a wide variety of common illnesses and working in the management of chronic pain control.

Graduates who have had a prior NHS medical qualification in Medicine, Nursing or Physiotherapy as well as in Osteopathy and Chiropractic has meant that our past members have received frequent referrals from their GP and Consultant colleagues in the NHS. Graduates that choose to work independently of the NHS has resulted in them opperating very busy independent private practices. This kind of work has appealed to both married members and those who wish to continue as Acupuncture Clinicians and maintain an income after they have retired from NHS work.

Presently the Government and the Department of Health are in the process of Statutory Regulating the Practice of Acupuncture in the UK, which will mean that all practitioners will hold registration by Act of Parliament in the same way as Doctor’s and Nurses etc do at present. By applying for Professional training now, you will be able to extend your clinical skills, and also have the opportunity of attaining dual Statutory Registration, not only as Doctor, Nurse, Midwife, Physiotherapist, Osteopath or Chiropractor but also as a fully registered Medical Acupuncturist.

  • On qualifying, graduates will also receive the Academy Licentiate Certificate, which allows the letters ‘Lic.Ac.’ to be used professionally.
  • As Acupuncture is essentially a practical subject, great emphasis is placed on clinical work.
  • The tutor/student ratios do not exceed one to seven, which guarantees a very high level of personal tuition for each student and enables them to cope well with the volume of work given.
  • Students are expected to study between course weekends and to present case study reports on practical work carried out.
  • Examinations at the end of the course are of both a theoretical and practical nature. In addition, a continuous assessment is made of each student during the period of the course weekends.
  • As most students are already in full time employment, courses take place on weekends.
  • The courses are in a style of postgraduate studies and the academic year is from September to April.
  • The courses and examinations have been designed to a standard which follow the National Occupational Standards closely.
